CHAPTER 18

Step one: make sure the Hartfords knew I was sticking around. I’d done that–-though, I’d officially gotten the hell out of dodge.

Step two: eat more bacon. Yeah, I ate bacon on my burger as a part of my last fucking meal in case.

Step three: figure out who put Ryder there. Also did that. Lord help Daddy Hartford if I ever ended up in the same fucking room as him.

Step four: figure out how to get Ryder out. I was still working that one out. Sure, Tessa had a whole fucking plan laid out for me—complete with blueprints, diagrams, checklists, and what-ifs—but she wasn’t here. I was the one standing in the dark woods staring at a two-story house with twenty-some guards and staff. Why so many?

Apparently, Ryder had tried to break out a few times before the spell was fine-tuned. And apparently, he gave them a run for their fucking money. I liked him all the more for it.

The plan sucked and involved running. There was so much goddamn cardio in the second half of her idea. I hated it. The no guns on the premises worked in my fucking favor—well, no guns inside a one-mile radius. No one could shoot me in the back while I got Ryder out.

All I had to do was get in, wake him up, and run like a bat out of hell. She was certain adrenaline would get Ryder out of the house and to the car—at least that was the hope. Eventually, everything would catch up with him and he’d crash and burn. Something about the aftermath, magic, and something else. I didn’t know. I just knew I had to get him to the car and get the fuck out of there.

I focused on that—the shit I knew I could handle instead of worrying about all the other crap. The house Hartford was keeping him in? Yeah, it was deep in the middle of the woods. We were in my territory. And that fucking house? It was meant to withstand magic, not powers. They weren’t prepared for someone like me.

It was too fucking easy.

Taking one last drag, I dropped my cigarette as my gaze drifted over the house once more. From the outside, it was a very normal two-story house. Simple windows with closed drapes, one front door, probably one back door, one unattached garage, and every fucking light on in the house. I knew from Tessa’s maps that the house was just a fucking farce. It was what was underneath that mattered.

The house had been built over a medical room designed specifically for all the shit they needed to keep Ryder there—some blend of magic and modern medicine. I didn’t fucking know. I just knew I could take the whole fucking house apart without worrying about hurting him in the process.

And that was just what I planned to do.

I took a moment—just one moment—to remind myself why I was doing this shit. Ryder. This wasn’t the first time I had done something incredibly stupid for a man, but I had no doubt it was the right thing.
